Hello Reception Friends and Families
What a brilliant and busy week we’ve had in Reception! Our continued theme this week has been Transport but like usual we have done so much more! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to.
Maths – Composition of Numbers
Throughout the week, the children have been deepening their understanding of number composition. We explored how numbers can be made up in different ways (for example, 4 can be 1 and 3, or 2 and 2). Through hands-on resources, fun number stories and practical activities, the children experimented with building numbers using cubes, counters and their own ideas. One of our favorite activities this week has been making stampoline prints where we showed 4 in different arrangements of cubes and printing them to show how it can be built in many different ways but will represents four! Their confidence in explaining their thinking is really growing—well done, Reception!
Exhibition Installation
Later in the week, the children helped create pieces for our upcoming exhibition. They experimented with craft materials, colours, shapes and textures to produce artwork linked to our Whispers of Winter theme. We are so excited to share this with your children on Monday. They should be so proud of their hard work!
(We also loved the christmas vibes in our Non-school uniform!)
Investigating and Making Boats
In Design and Technology this week, we explored floating and sinking as part of investigating boats. From our previous learning we found that paper or foil would be the best materials to make our boats from. This week we put these two to the test and looked at which would be strongest by testing which would hold the most glass beads! Lots of scientific thinking happening all around the classroom.
Little Robin Red Vest – Trip to Poole Lighthouse
This trip also inspired us to go back to the classroom and design our own vests for Little Robin!
Forest Schools
This week in Forest School, our Reception children got creative using clay to make faces on the trees, decorating them with twigs, leaves, and other natural resources. It was wonderful to see their imaginations in action as they shaped happy, funny, and silly expressions, while developing fine motor skills and learning through hands-on play. The forest buzzed with laughter, curiosity, and teamwork as the children explored textures, shared ideas, and proudly displayed their natural artworks, enjoying every moment of learning outdoors.
Adventure Time – Child-Led Learning
Every day, the children engaged in Adventure Time, choosing activities that interested them and allowed them to follow their own curiosities—an essential part of the EYFS curriculum. We have seen fantastic teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.
Notes for this week:
On Tuesday Reception are visiting St Marys Church! Please ensure your child has a coat and is wearing appropriate footwear. We will return to school for collection as usual at 3.30pm
Reminder: We collect reading diaries on Fridays.
Thank you for your continued support. We’re looking forward to another week of fun and learning with our Reception explorers!
#InspiredToLearn at it's very best!
