All Aboard! Reception Class Adventures

Hello Reception Families and Friends!

What a wonderful week we’ve had in Reception! Our theme has been Transport, and the children have been busy exploring, investigating, creating, and discovering in so many exciting ways. But in true Prince of Wales style, Reception have also taken part in a wealth of other hands-on learning experiences.

Throughout the week, the children explored the concept of comparison during our Maths sessions. They practised language such as more than, fewer than, and the same as, using practical resources to help them develop early number sense and confidence when investigating quantities.

A particular highlight this week has been our science investigation:

“Do bigger wheels roll the furthest?”

Inspire by the book 'The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk' the children worked like real scientists—predicting, testing, observing, and talking about what they noticed. They loved comparing the wheels and watching how far they travelled. Inquiry-based learning like this encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and early problem-solving skills.

This week in design technology, the children explored waterproof materials in preparation to create their own boats later this half term. This unit of learning builds early design, making, and testing skills and sparks wonderful conversations about floating, sinking and material properties.

Transport: Past and Present
Throughout the week, children have explored how transport has changed over time, from walking, horse-drawn carriages, and sailing ships to modern cars, trains, and airplanes. They compared past and present travel, discussing how technology, speed, and safety have influenced these changes. This helped the children develop a deeper understanding of the world, making connections between past and present and appreciating how transport has shaped daily life and society. The activity also encouraged observation, discussion, and critical thinking about progress and change over time.

Forest School
Reception had a leafy adventure in Forest School this week! The children were fully immersed in the wonders of nature as they explored the outdoor environment around our school pond. They had a fantastic time collecting a variety of leaves, observing their different shapes, sizes, and colors, and learning how to identify them. Children used their creativity and collections to design and make beautiful leaf crowns, carefully choosing and arranging the leaves to create their own unique designs.

Special Events This Week

Remembrance Day: On Wednesday, the children respectfully took part in a two-minute silence at 11am, joining the rest of the school in remembering and honouring others. These moments support children’s early understanding of community, history and shared values. We used this video to support children during this time:

World Kindness Day: On Thursday, we celebrated World Kindness Day with a special virtual assembly and a lovely conversation about how we can be kind to ourselves and others. We even nominated our very own Kindness Ambassadors! It was beautiful to see how thoughtful and caring the children were.

Children in Need: Today, the children enjoyed supporting Children in Need, with many wearing yellow to mark the day. Thank you for helping us to celebrate such an important cause.

We are so proud of how engaged, enthusiastic and kind the children have been this week. They are growing in independence, developing friendships, and embracing each new challenge with excitement.

Thank you for your ongoing support—we can’t wait for even more learning adventures next week!

Additional Home Phonics Learning

As many of you have noticed, Reception children are making fantastic progress with their phonics! Many are now ready to start blending sounds to read words. To support this learning at home, I've put together 10 short videos that reinforce what we’re doing in school. You can watch these with your child over breakfast, during a short break, or whenever you have a few minutes together. Following along will help your child become even more confident with blending sounds and building words.
