 Hi Reception Families,

Just to clarify, the Maths Mastery session tomorrow will be at 9:00, if you are attending your children will be brought into the session with you to complete some parts of the workshop. If you cannot attend, your child will remain in the classroom to play!

All the resources used in the session will be sent home over the next 6 weeks for home learning so everyone can use them.

Dragons, Knights and making Orange.

 Hi Reception Families,

We have had a lovely week, I was particularly impressed with how well the children worked at improving their racket and ball skills in PE this week!

In Understanding the World this week we learnt all about Dragons and Knights, we had a fantastic play project were children made a dragon and somewhere for the dragon to live.

In maths this week we have been focussing on composition to five, this helps children develop a deep understanding of their number bonds. We had a wonderful time focussing on the five speckled frogs. I wonder if the children can remember our stem sentence '4 and 1 makes 5' '3 and 2' makes 5.

In Expressive Art and Design we learnt how to make orange and painted, well an orange!

Turning our attention to next week.

It's a busy week, on Monday we have the fantastic Kapla with us Reception will be taking part first thing in the morning (probably wise) and parents are warmly invited to come and visit at 3:15 and take your children home a bit early.

Making green, ice and beanstalks

 Hi Reception Families,

We had a fantastic week, the children loved exploring Jack and the Beanstalk in Drawing Club,  I wonder if they can remember the signs for golden egg and magic harp?

In Understanding the Natural World this week we explored the question 'Does water make ice melt?' which the children had asked the week before. We had a fantastic time using thermometers, timers and water of different temperatures. We timed how long it took the ice to melt in each of the different temperatures.

In Expressive Art and Design we continued our practise of making green using blue and yellow, however this week, we studied leaves and painted what we noticed, the children were fantastic at this, they completely blew me away with their painting skills!

In maths we explored adding one more to make a staircase, this continues to support children's deep understanding of numbers 1-5.

Moving our attention to next week:

Drawing Club: Zog

Maths: Composing and Decomposing Numbers

Understanding the World: Dragons and Knights

Understanding the Natural World: How can we melt ice?

Expressive Art and Design: Making Orange

Please do ensure that children bring warm clothes with them as we go outside in all weathers, we actively encourage them to wear hats/ gloves etc if provided. Please make sure these are clearly named.

Please ensure all grapes are cut as in the picture below, they pose a significant choking hazard to young children.

Information regarding Parent Consultations will be communicated with you directly next week.

Don't forget our Maths Mastery Session is 30/1/24 at 9:00 we are looking forward to sharing our maths approaches with you.

As ever please do get in touch if there is anything we can help with.

Castles, Ice, and Home Learning

 Hi Reception Families,

What a wonderful week we had!

This week we started the first of three weeks exploring, Castles, people who lived in them and mythical creatures, the children have really enjoyed learning, building and playing castles.

The cold weather also inspired lots of exploration of all things frozen! We had lots of ice in our outdoors area and Mrs Hibberd had frozen some of our favorite toys for us to free!

In maths we were focussing on matching our dot patterns with the correct numeral and practicing our subutising skills.

In art this week we were learning how to carefully mix yellow and blue to make green, children were exploring how to mix colours only using a small amount of paint. We made lots of different shades.

In understanding the natural world we went on a sound hunt around the school and drew pictures of what we heard!

On Friday in PE we played Balloon tennis, we loved working with a partner, taking it in turns in hit the balloon into the air!

Turning our attention to next week:

Drawing Club: Jack and the Beanstalk

Maths: Ordering numerals and amounts

Understanding the World: People who lived in Castles

Understanding the Natural World: Ice cube investigation

Expressive Art and Design: Sketching, and painting

Home Learning: This week children brought home a sheet of home learning, we strongly encourage that children complete this sheet, they can use their 'fred talk' to sound out the words 'c-a-t' (they don't have to complete it) and practise their pattern tracing.

Children may have brought home a reading book, reading sheet or writing sheet for their Read Write Inc group this week. As discussed during our Parent Information Session, the home learning tasks are optional, however, we expect children to read or be read to every night and reading records returned on a Friday. We find that children enjoy completing the home learning and we love to see them once they are completed.

This term we have introduced 'Busy Books' from 8:45-9:05 children have the opportunity to complete a number of tasks designed to support their writing, reading and maths skills, these change daily and form part of our calm focussed activities to start the day, children really enjoy this time to connect with their peers and complete 'early morning jobs' before our learning time begins at 9:00.

Please cut up grapes and large blueberries as these form a significant choking hazard for young children.

As ever if there is anything we can help with catch us on the door at the beginning or end of the day.

2D&3D Shapes, Bean bags and The Gingerbread Man

 Hi Reception Families,

We had a lovely peaceful start to the term. This week in Maths we were learning about 2D and 3D  shapes, we explored which 3D shapes stack and which ones roll. It was also helpful to remember the names and attributes of 2D shapes, I wonder if the children can tell you how many sides and corners a square has?

In Drawing Club we were focussing on The Gingerbread Man (run  run as fast as you can!) On Tuesday in Understanding the World we learnt about bridges and what makes them so strong. We made a bridge for The Gingerbread Man to safely cross the river.

In Understanding the Natural World, we began to explore different types of sounds and what makes them. Next week we will be going on a sound hunt!

In PE we were practicing our throwing and catching skills using a bean bag with a partner. Ask the children where I threw a bean bag by mistake!
