Castles, Ice, and Home Learning

 Hi Reception Families,

What a wonderful week we had!

This week we started the first of three weeks exploring, Castles, people who lived in them and mythical creatures, the children have really enjoyed learning, building and playing castles.

The cold weather also inspired lots of exploration of all things frozen! We had lots of ice in our outdoors area and Mrs Hibberd had frozen some of our favorite toys for us to free!

In maths we were focussing on matching our dot patterns with the correct numeral and practicing our subutising skills.

In art this week we were learning how to carefully mix yellow and blue to make green, children were exploring how to mix colours only using a small amount of paint. We made lots of different shades.

In understanding the natural world we went on a sound hunt around the school and drew pictures of what we heard!

On Friday in PE we played Balloon tennis, we loved working with a partner, taking it in turns in hit the balloon into the air!

Turning our attention to next week:

Drawing Club: Jack and the Beanstalk

Maths: Ordering numerals and amounts

Understanding the World: People who lived in Castles

Understanding the Natural World: Ice cube investigation

Expressive Art and Design: Sketching, and painting

Home Learning: This week children brought home a sheet of home learning, we strongly encourage that children complete this sheet, they can use their 'fred talk' to sound out the words 'c-a-t' (they don't have to complete it) and practise their pattern tracing.

Children may have brought home a reading book, reading sheet or writing sheet for their Read Write Inc group this week. As discussed during our Parent Information Session, the home learning tasks are optional, however, we expect children to read or be read to every night and reading records returned on a Friday. We find that children enjoy completing the home learning and we love to see them once they are completed.

This term we have introduced 'Busy Books' from 8:45-9:05 children have the opportunity to complete a number of tasks designed to support their writing, reading and maths skills, these change daily and form part of our calm focussed activities to start the day, children really enjoy this time to connect with their peers and complete 'early morning jobs' before our learning time begins at 9:00.

Please cut up grapes and large blueberries as these form a significant choking hazard for young children.

As ever if there is anything we can help with catch us on the door at the beginning or end of the day.
