Hello Reception Families and Friends,
What a wonderfully colourful week we’ve had in Reception! Our topic focus this week has been all about colour, and the children have thrown themselves into exploring, experimenting, and creating with enthusiasm and curiosity.
We kicked off the week with an open-ended sensory primary colour tuff tray, where the children had the chance to explore the three primary colours – red, blue, and yellow. There was so much excitement as we experimented with mixing these colours to discover the secondary colours on Monday afternoon. We quickly noticed a funny result too – mix all the colours together, and you end up with a greeny-brown surprise! It sparked lots of giggles and great conversations about colour.
This week Reception also made our class Christmas cards (yes, a little early, but we’re excited!). The children had a fantastic time creating beautiful Christmas trees using different strips of paper. This activity wasn’t just about getting crafty – it also led to some wonderful mathematical talk about shorter and longer, measuring and comparing lengths in a hands-on way. - Please note that these cards can be ordered by families online, in advance for Christmas.
Speaking of maths, this week the children have been focusing on Counting, Cardinality, and Ordinality with numbers 0–5 (a key part of this teaching children the skill to move an item when they count it to prevent grouped items from being counted a second time). In continuous provision, they explored ways to represent these numbers on a 10s frame using conkers, giving them a practical and playful way to understand numbers.
In Phonics, we’ve been learning the sounds ‘c’, ‘k’, ‘u’, ‘b’, and ‘f’. To help consolidate learning at home, we’ve included a QR code at the bottom of this blog with 10 videos exploring the sounds we’ve covered over the past two weeks. We encourage you to share these with your children – it’s a great way to support their learning and fill in any gaps in their sound recognition.
Our cooking session this week was full of learning and fun! The focus was on knife safety, and the children practiced using child-friendly knives with playdough. This is perfect preparation for our upcoming class pumpkin soup, where they will get hands-on chopping vegetables safely.
And, of course, we’ve enjoyed our usual Adventure Time, full of smiles, friendships, cooperative work, and curious exploration. The children have truly embraced learning through play, showing creativity, resilience, and teamwork in every activity.
Looking Ahead
Next week promises more excitement! On Thursday, it is World Sight Day, and the children will take part in a workshop all about glasses, different sight conditions, and general awareness of sight difficulties and support available.
Then, on Friday, POWSA are hosting our annual Autumn Fest from 5–7pm! There will be live music, pumpkin carving, autumn crafts, conker rolling, a campfire with toasted marshmallows, and food available – a perfect opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the season.
Phonics Home Learning: As Reception continue to make great progress in their Phonics lessons, we’d like to share some helpful videos for you to enjoy with your children at home. These focus on the first 10 sounds we’ve been practising in class. While we’ve already explored more than these, mastering these first 10 will give your child a really strong foundation as they move forward in their phonics journey.
Before the end of this half term, the children will take part in a short assessment, and in Autumn Term 2 we will begin to group them to provide the best support for their individual learning needs.
We recommend watching just 1–2 of these videos a day, as this helps to keep practice meaningful without becoming overwhelming.
We’d also like to say a huge thank you to all of you who have been recording in your child’s reading record—it makes such a difference! Reading together at home is such a powerful way to bring stories and learning to life.
We hope you have a lovely weekend!
Warm regards,
Miss Godden and the Reception Team
