Hello Reception families and friends!
What a wonderful week we’ve had in Reception! This week the children have thrown themselves into their activities with great enthusiasm. From learning new sounds in phonics to exploring creativity in junk modelling, they are already showing so much independence and confidence as they settle into school life.
We have begun our phonics journey this week and have been learning the sounds m, a, s, d, and t. The children have enjoyed practising these sounds in different ways – through songs, actions, games and plenty of opportunities to listen carefully to words that begin with these sounds. You may already notice your child spotting and saying these sounds at home – do encourage them to share what they’ve learned!
In Literacy, the big focus this week has been name writing. Every child has been practising forming their letters correctly and taking pride in writing their name independently. We are so impressed with the effort and determination shown – the progress in just a short time has been fantastic!
In maths, we’ve been learning all about the numbers 4 and 5. The children have explored different ways to make these numbers, spotting them in the environment, and using practical resources to build their understanding. From counting objects to making groups, the children are really beginning to see how numbers fit into their world.

DT has been a chance for creativity to shine this week! The children have had lots of fun with junk modelling – cutting, sticking, building and imagining. It’s been wonderful to see their ideas come to life, from rockets and castles to robots and cars. The freedom to explore and create has led to some fantastic discussions and teamwork.
In Cooking, we’ve also been exploring pumpkins, inspired by the story
Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper. The children learned about pumpkins and the process of a pumpkin growing from seed to harvest. Cooking together is such a valuable way to develop new skills, confidence and curiosity around food. Reception are looking to inviting you in to school in the near future to come and taste taste our class soup!
Of course, one of the highlights of Reception continues to be Adventure Time. The children have embraced the opportunity to choose their own learning and explore the wide range of resources available. From building and role play to painting and puzzles, it’s been a joy to see their independence and imagination flourish.
We are so proud of all the children this week – they have worked hard, shown great enthusiasm, and supported each other beautifully. We’re looking forward to another exciting week ahead!
A Few Notices
A heartfelt thank you to all parents who have been supporting their children’s independence at morning drop-off by stepping back from the door. We have been so impressed with how confidently the children are coming into school – they are doing brilliantly, and we couldn’t be prouder of them!
We hope you spotted your child’s new reading diary in their bag over the weekend. We’re excited to see and hear about all the wonderful books you’re sharing at home. Reading diaries are collected on Friday mornings and returned later that same day, ready for the weekend.
A gentle reminder to please ensure that all water bottles and items of clothing are clearly named. This really helps us reunite belongings quickly with their owners. At the moment, we have two unnamed jumpers/cardigans in the classroom and a water bottle that was found in the hall without a name but was thankfully returned to the Reception classroom.
MONDAY (29/09/25) - SCHOOL PHOTOS (INDIVIDUAL AND SIBLING)- Apologies for mixing this up on the previous blog post.
Thank you for your ongoing support,
Miss Godden and the Reception Team.
