Relationships and Sex Education Parent Information Sessions

We are holding parent information sessions for each class to explain our approach to Relationships and Sex Education as follows:

Monday 1st June                              Reception
Tuesday 2nd June                            Year 1
Wednesday 3rd June                        Year 2
Thursday 4th June                            Year 4
Friday 5th June                                 Year 3

As usual these will be held in the school hall from 9.00 until 9.30.

These sessions are designed to explain how the Jigsaw scheme of work that we are using in common with most other DASP First schools introduces Relationships and Sex education in an age appropriate, progressive way in a short series of lessons within the unit of work called "Changing Me".

Information about this is coming home via a newsletter but we hope these extra parent information sessions will be helpful in explaining the school's approach which has been approved by the governing body.

POWSA Summer Fair Saturday 6th June

At POWSA Towers we've been working hard to prepare for the Summer Fair. On Saturday 6th June we have the annual inter - school football & netball tournaments and running alongside these the chance for you to all enjoy yourselves, have fun and support the school. There will be games to play, candyfloss, burgers and juices to keep you going as well as the chance to cheer on the teams from years 3 & 4. There will be competitions: colouring, scone baking and a Minecraft challenge!

We have already received some initial donations of crockery and will welcome any more donations that you can spare. Please don't donate anything that might make an appearance on Antiques Roadshow but if you have any plates or bowls that are old, chipped or just unloved we will put them to a smashing new use.

There is a sign up sheet at the schools reception, if you can spare some time to help us on the day, be it flipping burgers on the BBQ (we'll supply the apron) or running a game for an hour please let us know, your help and support is greatly appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you there, the football  & netball kick off at 11am

This week...

Hello everyone,

As we approach the end of the first half of the summer term we are going to be finishing up our seaside topic! Our art job this week is to decorate a pebble each that will be placed outside the classroom with a nice welcome sign. Hopefully you'll be able to see this when we come back from half-term.
In our literacy job this week we are going to be continuing with our seaside scrapbooks that we started last week. The children have all written a short summary of our beach trip as well as a senses poem. We'll be finishing our scrapbook by adding our favourite part about the beach. Lots of fantastic writing happening at the moment which we are all very proud of!
In maths this week we are having a bit of a Numicon week. We will be doing some one more and one less with written sums as well as adding and subtracting some single digit numbers. We will also begin to teach children the relationship between addition and subtraction by looking at inverse sums. Sound very complicated!

Finally, if there is any other children that would like to take part in another 'Ditch Your Stabilisers' session please come and see us as there will hopefully be another session after half-term if there is sufficient interest.

What a super week!

Hello everyone,

We've had a very busy week this week! There were quite a few tired children at the end of today. Thank you for all your help with the beach trip - this was a great success and has helped to inspire the writing we have done yesterday and today. Some children have written postcards about their trip to the beach - some of these are displayed as you walk into the classroom. Other children have begun compiling a scrapbook about our trip to the beach that we will be finishing off next week. As we approach the final few weeks we will be encouraging almost complete independence in writing. This will be tricky but with lots of praise and encouragement we will get there!
Next week we will be decorating some of the pebbles we brought back from the beach. We will also hopefully be sending home the Mr. Men magnets that the children made a couple of week ago.

Sound pots and tricky words

Hello everyone,

At the beginning of the year we gave each child a sound pot and added to it when we covered new sounds. As we are coming to the end of the year we would like to start collecting them in if you feel as though your child knows the sounds well enough. If you still value and use the sound pot then please feel free to keep the until the end of the year!

Also, we are having a bit of a focus on tricky words and I thought it would be useful if you had a list of all the tricky words we have covered so far this year. There are quite a few. Any help with these at home would be great!

Phase 2: to, no, go, I, the
Phase 3: all, are, was, he, be, we, she, me, my, they, you
Phase 4: come, some, have, do, so, said, were, there, one, out, little, like, what, when

Stick them on doors, fridges and windows!

More bottles needed

Hello again,

We have our beach trip tomorrow which we are very much looking forward to! The weather isn't looking too bad either! Please make sure you send children to school with play clothes on. They will not need to bring uniform as we will stay in these clothes all day.

As you know we are making a bottle greenhouse and for this to work we need 2 litre bottles. Thank you very much for the bottles that you have already bought in but we still need more! If you have any please bring them into school. They do have to be a standard 2 litre bottle shape as other shapes don't slot together very easily. We are hoping to get half of the greenhouse finished before the end of the year.
Whilst we're on the topic of recycling, our junk modelling area is once again running out of materials. Anything you can bring in would be greatly appreciated. We have introduced a plan and do system with junk modelling that requires the children to design something first before then setting about making it.

New topic!

Hello everyone,

We have finally come to an end of our Mr. Men topic! It was greatly enjoyed by the children and there was some great work done. Tomorrow will see us begin our new topic: The Seaside. We have our beach trip on Wednesday and this will hopefully help to inspire some writing that we will be doing later on in the week. Below are some home learning ideas for our new topic.

  • Draw a picture of an island and draw on all the things that you would take with you.
  • Write a list of what you might wear at the beach when it is hot.
  • Write a message in a bottle that can be sent out to sea. Explain who you are and where you live etc.
  • Research your favourite sea creature and its habitat.
  • Write a sentence that goes with the picture below.

New Wow! Moments

Hello all,

From tomorrow we will be placing some new Wow! Moment templates in the wallet in the cloakroom area. Please feel free to continue using the old template if you still have some left. It has been great to see children still brining in their Wow! Moments and we still read them out before sending them to Mr. Farrington. A possible idea for a Wow! Moment is to get your child to write it themselves! It doesn't have to be long and you can help with spelling!
Also, we still have a few boxes and containers left over from the very successful bake off competition held last week. We are keeping them on top of the trays as you come into the classroom.
Finally, we have our beach trip next Wednesday so any help would be greatly appreciated. Please come and see one of us and we'll jot your name down. Thank you

This weeks happenings

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying the extra day off! When we come back tomorrow we will begin concluding our Mr. Men topic. We had a super party on Friday where the children got to play games and, of course, eat! Thank you for coming in to help us with the eating.
This week we will be carrying on making our Mr. Men magnets. The children have all started by molding their shape using clay. Now they are dry we can begin to paint them and then add the magnet. These should hopefully be coming home soon for you to pin onto the fridge.
We'll also be carrying on our story making this week with 'The Enormous Turnip'. We have begun to change certain bits of the story so see if you can come up with some new characters or a new vegetable etc.
This week in numeracy we are covering all sorts! We are going to be counting up to 20 in order - any help with this at home would be great - as well as adding and subtracting single digit numbers using objects. Some children had a go at solving word problems last week involving addition and subtraction, and they were great at this!
We'll also be continuing our sports morning preparations. The children will be working in teams to cover lots of different skills including team work!
