Hello everyone,

On Thursday 15th December reception will be having their Christmas Party lunch and afternoon. We will all be staying in the classroom on this day to have a picnic lunch together! Hot dinners have been cancelled for this day. We will be putting a list up outside the classroom door for you to sign up to bring an item of food into school on the day to contribute towards the party! There are several different areas to ensure that we don't end up with hundreds of sausage rolls!! Please do not feel like you have to provide home made food, shop bought will be more than fine! If there are any issues please come and see one of us! After this we will be having an afternoon of fun and games in school and will join up wiith years 1 & 2 for a dance and boogie in the hall towards the end of the afternoon. Thank you.

Reception - Christmas is here!!!

Image result for christmas excited

Hello everyone,

Yes, today we began our last topic of the calendar year... CHRISTMAS! The children were understandably excited; especially about their impending advent calendars! We spoke a bit about Christmas wish lists and looked at a Harry and the Dinosaurs book about Christmas time! Over the next few weeks it does get very busy and things happen everyday! We will attempt to keep you up to date with anything that is happening! We have begun our preparation for the Christmas plays today and thank you to those that bought in their red or green t-shirt to wear for the performances! If you want to get your tickets for the Christmas plays then please head to the office and they will help you.
This Friday is the schools Christmas Fair! It begins at 3.30pm and goes on until 5.00pm. You are welcome to take your child to this straight after school! There will be lots to do!

'qu' as in quack - Make a duck's beak with your hands and say qu, qu, qu
'sh' as in ship - Place index finger over lips and say shshsh.

Final reminder that it is our class assembly tomorrow morning! We look forward to seeing you all there!

Reception - Home learning for 'The Gruffalo'

Image result for gruffalo

Hi all,

As we move further and further into the year we are increasing the amount of time that children are working on tasks and activities set by the adults in the classroom. Children will be taught the skills needed to be successful and given the tools they need to help them learn! We are always encouraging independence in learning and we are seeing some very positive attitudes so far! Any learning that takes place at home is fantastic to us and we would love to see anything that you have made, written, or drawn at home!
With that in mind, we have put some potential home learning ideas down below for you to have a go at! Home learning in reception is not compulsory but can be a great way to show children early on the importance and value of learning at home. We've linked most of the ideas below to our current topic of the Gruffalo...

  • Create your own creature like the Gruffalo! You could then challenge yourself to add some labels to describe the different features.
  • Find 2 rhyming words for each of these words: Fox, Mouse & Snake.
  • Find out one piece of information about either a fox, a mouse, an owl or a snake.
  • Write the word 'Gruffalo' in as interesting way as you can.
  • Find 5 different numbers around your house and write them down, i.e door number

As previously said, it is not an expectation for children to bring in home learning and please don't feel like you have to complete every one of the above activities! Just one would be brilliant. There is also no deadline for bringing bits in! We hope to see lots of different pieces of home learning! Thank you.

Last day for Operation Christmas child shoe boxes!

Just a reminder that tomorrow will be the last day that we will be taking the 'Operation Christmas child' shoe boxes at school. Mrs Mewitt has kindly said she would take the shoe boxes that people have bought in to school to the drop off point in Weymouth. So if you have a shoe box please bring them in tomorrow. Also please remember that the shoe boxes need £3 in them to support the transportation fees.

Thank you for supporting this cause

Reception - Phonics

Image result for phonics

Hello everyone,

This week in phonics we have been carrying on with the sounds of the alphabet. However, next week, we will begin learning sounds that have two and three letters together. This is when phonics does become more complex. There will hopefully be a session for parents to attend very soon! More information to follow! Below are the sounds we have been learning this week...

'w' as in wind - Blow on to open hand, as if you are the wind, and say wh, wh, wh.
'x' as in box - Pretend to hold a camera and click the button down, saying ks, ks, ks.
'y' as in yell - Pretend to be eating a yogurt and say y, y, y.

We have also been learning some tricky words over the past couple of weeks. These are words that cannot be sounded out using phonics and need to be learnt by sight in a lot of instances. We've out the first few below for your information.

  • No
  • Go
  • To
  • The

Reception - Thorncombe woods

Image result for thorncombe woods

Hi all,

Today we went off to Thorncombe woods for our first trip on a coach! The children conducted themselves very well even though there was a change in how the morning ran! We had a lovely walk in woods before gathering leaves into big piles! There were some very impressive piles there! After that we collected various different things from the woods and had an extra snack of a chocolate biscuit! There were certainly some tired children this afternoon but a big well done to everyone! There will hopefully be some pictures up on the board tomorrow morning so you can see what we got up to!
Thank you to everyone who came along to help for the morning. We hope that the experience hasn't deterred you from coming on future trips!

Reception - Thorncombe Woods trip tomorrow

Image result for thorncombe woods

Hello everyone,

Tomorrow is the reception classes trip to Thorncombe woods! This is a trip we have run for a few years now with great success. We will be heading to the new Visitor's Centre in the woods to carry out various activities! We will also be linking this trip to our new topic: The Gruffalo. We had a brief introduction today and will be exploring this topic in lots of different ways in the coming weeks.
For the trip tomorrow please could you send children to school wearing their play clothes. It is up to you whether you send children in with their school tops on or not. Please either wear wellies into school or bring them in a bag. If you do choose to wear them into school, please send in some alternative footwear to put on when we get back to school. And as you are well aware, it has been quite chilly the past few days so please make sure children have plenty of layers on as we will be outside for parts of the trip. We will be back at shool for lunch so a packed lunch will not be required!
If you have volunteered to help on the trip tomorrow, firstly, thank you very much! Please head into school like normal and settle your child in. When hands are clapped please stay in the classroom whilst we prepare children to get onto the coach!

All years - Christmas Card Orders - 2nd November 2016

Christmas card orders
We received communication today that the online ordering for the xmas cards has now failed completely. The company are reverting to paper orders and a pack is being sent to school. As far as we are aware any successful online orders are still valid but all others will need to complete paper order forms and bring money to school. This is not an ideal situation however POWSA are at hand to help you solve any issues and can take cash or cheques.

So, on Friday 4 th November and Monday 7 th November before and after school POWSA will be manning a table in the foyer where you can fill in the order forms and hand over cash or cheques.  We apologise for this inconvenience, however this is out of our control and are working hard to make the process successful!

Reception - Phonics this week

Image result for phonics

Hello everyone,

We have started learning the next phase of sounds this week. Due to the fact that we weren't in school on Monday we'll only be learning two new sounds this week. As the weeks go on the sounds will start to get harder to recognise initially but do not despair! We will be practising them lots over the coming months and I promise that they do get learnt eventually! Any practise that you can do at home will be great with this and will help speed up the process. There will be home learning suggestions on the blog but any extra reading is always a bonus!

Sounds this week:

'j' as in jam - Pretend to wobble on a plate and say j, j, j.
'v' as in van - Pretend to be holding the steering wheel of a van and say vvvvvv.

Christmas card orders

Christmas card orders

Hopefully you have all received your child’s card design? You were given the information to order through the company directly on the back of the art work. The art work needs to come back to school to your child’s classroom, into their envelope - by Friday 4th November end of this week, ready to be sent off.

The company will be collecting on Monday 7th November from our school office, no set time has been given so it is vitally important the art work is back in the class envelope on Friday please.
We are hoping for the cards to be delivered back to school around 22nd November.
