Problem solving with year 1!

Hello everyone,

Today we had the opportunity to work with the year 1 class to solve some practical problems. As we are focusing on 'Resilience' for our learning power at the moment we were encouraging children to persevere and manage their distractions. It was lovely to see so many children working together with each other (and children from another class!) to try and figure out a solution. The problems they had a go at are written down below.

  • Radioactive field. Children had three planks and had to get across a space without touching the floor.
  • Spaghetti and tweezers - you had to get the bits and pieces out of the spaghetti only using tweezers.
  • Duplo tower - You had to make a tower out of Duplo that was one metre tall.
  • Egg jacket - Children had to come up with a contraption that meant an egg wouldn't break when dropped from a good height.
  • Dominos - How long could you build a stack of Dominos before they fell over.
  • Moving car - Children had to move a truck from one location to another without touching it with any part of their bodies.
Needless to say there were some very novel ways of solving the problems and some children clearly have a very unique way of thinking about things. We will continue to carry out sessions like this so that children can become familiar with the year 1 classroom and interact with children who have already been in year 1!
There should hopefully be some pictures on the school website soon for you to look at.

  1. It seems like some amazing problems were solved by the Reception and Year 1 team, fishing marbles out of spaghetti with tweezers?!!! And Imogen has come home with a first. "We ate meatballs and I loved it they were delicious", she has never in the 5 years and 3 months of her life said that about the meatballs at home??? Maybe it was a Year 1 recipe but definitely need to know how you solved that problem!

    1. It was a Reception recipe and we can let you have a copy if you like! All the children that have made meatballs and pasta (or Dinosaur eggs in a nest) have tried them! So proud of all your children for giving them a go.
