Hello Reception Families and Friends!
What an enchanting day it’s been in Reception! Our classroom has been sparkling with imagination, creativity, and just a little bit of winter magic as we journeyed through our Sculpture Unit, inspired by the mystical themes of Queen Mab and Whispers of Winter.
Over the past four weeks, the children have been working step-by-step to construct their very own fantastical sculptures. Beginning with clay bases and sturdy wooden dowels, the children gradually built up their creations using a mixture of polystyrene shapes, colourful beads, and decorative card. This slow and thoughtful process allowed the children to see their ideas grow week by week—developing fine motor skills, perseverance, and pride in their work as their sculptures came to life. Once assembled, we finished by painting the clay bases and polystyrene, transforming them into shimmering winter characters ready for display.
And what a display it became!
This Friday, we spent a full day transforming our space into a true Whispers of Winter exhibition, ready to showcase these magical sculptures to the whole school. Every child had a part to play as we crafted an enchanted landscape to surround our artwork. Together we created, Fantasy film flowers, paper-chain woodland vines, printed flowers using recycled toilet roll tubes, toadstool mushrooms made from corks and recycled egg cartons, pine cones painted in glistening gold and shimmering silver.
Our classroom and corridors soon looked like a scene from a winter fairy film—full of sparkle, texture, and imagination. The children were delighted to see their sculptures proudly displayed among the enchanted forest they helped create.
In the afternoon, our creativity went whole-school as Reception joined forces with Years 1–4 to design and build junk-modelled kingdoms for our Whispers of Winter characters. It was a joy to see the children collaborating, sharing ideas, and working with older peers—an unforgettable experience of teamwork and imagination.
We are so incredibly proud of everything the Reception children have created over these past few weeks. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and confidence has just amazed us!
Thank you for your continued support—we hope you enjoyed the magic of today as much as we did!
Here’s to more creativity, curiosity, and wonder as we journey through the rest of the year.
