Home learning

Hello everyone,

We're still emerged in our Mr. Men topic at school. Earlier on in the week the children found a mysterious briefcase on the grass. After finding the key for the padlock we have found out that in the briefcase so far are a pair of scissors, an apple, a hammer and a nail! The children have been really intrigued about where the suitcase came from and who it belongs to. We've had some super suggestions so far but are still unsure. We will look at another clue tomorrow to see if it helps us. Below are some ideas for some home learning - as always anything you do at home is great and we would love to see it!

  • Write down who you think the briefcase belongs to and why!
  • Finish writing this sentence. If I were a Mr. Man/Little Miss I would.....
  • Write a caption that goes with the picture below:

  • Being Mr. Quick or Mr. Slow, measure how long it takes for you to do things - getting ready for school, putting shoes on, eating dinner, tidying toys away.
  • Look at some of the words used for Mr. Men/Little Miss and discuss their meaning: greedy, trouble, fussy, worry, nonsense, daydream etc.
Finally, we are in the process of updating out Wow! Moment certificate so you may not be able to get any for a few days. We will let you know when the new look Wow! Moments will be available.

Bake off success!

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for your fantastic cakes and bakes you brought in today. There were so many of them! Also, thank you very much for your extremely kind donations you gave - as mentioned before, these will go to SENSE, a charity for the deaf and blind. There was an informal competition element to the bake off so Congratulations to Euan, Leo and Sunny who came 3rd, 2nd and 1st. Well done everyone though, you will be receiving a certificate soon for all your efforts.

In other news, if you put your name down for a copy of the reception assembly video they are now ready to go. We will pop them into your child's book bag tomorrow for you to watch at home. We would ask that you keep this video for private use and adhere to the school's policy on sharing media on the internet. I'm sure there will be another video in our summer assembly!

Parent information session

Hi all,

Monday's parent information session for the reception class will be taking place in the year 1 classroom. This is because the class photographs will be taking place in the hall! Please feel free to head straight through to the year 1 classroom, which is past the hall as you walk through, on Monday morning. Remember to brush your hair for Monday!

Reception video

Hello everyone,

Today we went up to the farm! It was a great trip and the children got to see quite a bit! We got to see some rams being shaved ready for the hot weather, the lambs that hadn't long been born and some little chicks that had hatched! We'll pop some photos up on the board tomorrow morning for you to have a look at.

As you may remember, in our assembly at the end of last term, reception made a video to show you. There were some people that were interested in having a copy of the video at the time so we ordered some DVD's to put it onto. The DVD's have finally come so I will put a list up outside the classroom door asking who would like a copy - just to get a rough idea of the numbers. Thank you

Maiden Castle Farm

Hi all,

Just a quick note about our farm trip tomorrow. It may be a warm day again tomorrow so can children please have a big drinks bottle and have sun cream on if they need it. We are able to put more sun cream on once we are back, if you have filled out a permission slip. If any parents are able to help please stay tomorrow morning - the more the merrier.

Awards

Hi all,

Just a quick message to say well done to all the children that won an award today in the awards assembly. Some children will have come home with certificates and others with trophies. These children were chosen for their fantastic progress last half-term and the same awards will be given out at the end of this half-term.
The children have amazed us with how quickly they have learnt 'The Enormous Turnip' story! Ask them to tell it to you over the weekend.

Some home learning ideas

Hello everyone,

It has been great to hear how well Mr. Bump has been treated by the children that have taken him home so far! As tomorrow is the weekend we will be giving Mr. Bump to someone for the weekend who we think has amazed us all week! When you have Mr. Bump it would be great to have pictures, writing or drawings that you do to stick up! Today the children also went to Life Education Van that comes into school every year. Reception learnt about their bodies and how to keep some parts of your body healthy.
As you are probably aware, Mr. Men are running rampant in the classroom. Below are a few ideas for some home learning (not just Mr. Men based).

  • Write a sentence about one of your days out over the Easter holiday.
  • See if you can think of a Mr. Men/Little Miss character for every letter of the alphabet (you may have to make some up).
  • Using any 2D shapes, draw a Mr. Man/Little Miss or create a new one.
  • Thinking about Mr. Happy - write down some of the things that make you happy!
  • Write down one thing that you learnt in the Life Education Van today.
We look forward to seeing any fantastic work that you bring in.

Sunshine!

Hello all,

With the arrival of warmer weather the sun becomes ever stronger. We would recommend sending your child to school with a hat for the rest of the year as this will help keep them protected. We do have a few hats in school but not enough for everybody. Also, we are able to apply sun cream to your child but require a form filled in giving us permission to do so. If you would like one of these, please come and speak to us.
It has been great to get outside and do some gardening this week. So far we have planted potatoes, swede, spinach and carrots. We asked the children what they would like and we are yet to plant our tomatoes, spring onions and strawberry plants! We'll have the basis for a whole meal by the time we're done! If anyone has any large plant pots that they no longer need, please bring them into school as we are slightly lacking.
Also this week we have started learning 'The Enormous Turnip' story. The children are learning to tell the story orally with the help of actions. Ask your child to see how much they can remember - bearing in mind we have only been learning it since Monday.

We're back again!

Hello everyone,

A big welcome back to school today. It was great to see all the children interested in sharing what they have been up to over the Easter holidays - especially how many Easter eggs they had acquired.
The summer term will hopefully signal some nice weather for us to get up to a whole variety of things.
The parent information session for the reception class is the 27th April at 9.00am. I'll cover everything that we're getting up to this term and more then, but today we began our new topic that we will be doing for 3 weeks..... Mr. Men! Great to see that children are still bringing in the books! Today all the children had a chance to go onto the Mr. Men website: http://www.themistermen.co.uk/videos/more_games.html They were given a chance to create their own Mr. Man/Little Miss and explore the other items on the website.
Also today the children were introduced to Mr. Bump (picture above)! He is a soft toy that will be given out to children on a daily basis to begin with. We will be giving Mr. Bump out based on who we feel has been particularly focused on their work , made lots of progress or simply been kind and courteous to their friends. Please could we ask that Mr. Bump is brought back into school at the beginning of every day please. This is so we can pass it on to the next child. Thank you and we look forward to hearing what you and Mr. Bump have been up to!
