Superhero Adventures in Recpetion!

 Hello Reception Families and Friends!

What an action-packed week we have had in Reception! Our classroom has been filled with superhero energy, creativity, and determination as we dove deep into the theme for the next few weeks: Superheroes! The children have shown incredible engagement across all areas of the curriculum and have had lots of fun exploring our new topic.

Our focus text this week was the wonderful Super Milly and the Super School Day, which sparked brilliant discussions about our own everyday superpowers like kindness and perseverance. Children have pondered over what superpowers they would like to have if they became superheroes. We have also been learning about Onomatopoeia (using words that phonetically imitate, resemble, or suggest the sound) such as 'pop!', 'bang!' and 'crash!'.

In addition to this, Reception have started a new daily writing task where they write four words a day on their whiteboard based off the pictures they can see on the board. We have been so proud of the independence children have begun having over their writing!

Maths

As Reception are now stepping closer towards the transition to Yr1, we have been stretching our mathematical brains in so many directions this week! Our focus areas included:

  • Subitising on a Rekenrek: The children loved using the rekenrek counting frames to recognise groups of beads instantly without counting them one by one—a foundational skill for excellent number sense.
  • Number Bonds to 10: We practiced finding pairs of numbers that make 10 through fun morning challenges.
  • Power Maths (Composing & Decomposing Shapes): We explored how complex shapes can be broken down into smaller shapes and put back together to support our spatial awareness.
  • Whole Class Problem Solving: On Thursday, we pooled our brains together to tackle a big mathematical puzzle, practicing team collaboration and mathematical talk.

Catch the Slime Monster! (Our Trap-Making Adventure)

As you may have spotted on our weekly timetable, Monday afternoon kicked off with a high-stakes, hands-on engineering challenge, Trap Making! Word spread that a mysterious, mischievous Monster was on the loose in the classroom, and our Reception children immediately stepped up as superheros!  This activity was a spectacular way to weave critical thinking, communication, and physical development into our Understanding the World  curriculum alongside some beautiful teamwork.

In preparation for this coming week:

Thank you all for your continued support at home. We wish you a wonderful, relaxing weekend, and we can’t wait to see what superhero adventures next week brings!
