Reception’s Magical Week of Christmas Creativity

Hello Reception Families and Friends,

What a magical week it has been in Reception! The classroom has been buzzing with excitement as we’ve divided into all things Christmas! From creative crafts and festive writing to hands-on maths and an adventurous trip out, the children have embraced every activity with curiosity, enthusiasm, and plenty of festive cheer.

Maths Fun with 2D Shapes
This week in maths, we’ve been exploring 2D shapes. The children have been learning to identify circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares—and even had a sneak peek at semicircles, discovering that they are half of a whole circle! We started with a sorting activity to help children spot each shape and then moved on to a hands-on challenge: creating 2D shapes with playdough. We talked about the number of sides and corners each shape has, and the children did a brilliant job at making their shapes come to life with their own little hands.

Writing with a Festive Twist
In our writing sessions, the children created their very own Christmas wish lists for Father Christmas! They carefully cut, stuck, and labeled the items they hoped for this festive season. Later in the week, we posted these special letters to “Father Christmas.” Keep an eye out for these letters arriving at home soon! When sharing them with your child, please tell them that Father Christmas has read their letters and was so impressed by their writing that he passed them on to you to celebrate their amazing work. All of the items the children chose were from Smyths Toy Stores—perfect inspiration for a little extra festive excitement.

Festive Crafts Galore
Christmas creativity continued with our new skill of printing to make Christmas cards. I won’t give too much away, so you can enjoy seeing these special creations when they come home. We’ve also started decorating our very own Christmas wreaths by painting pasta, which we’ll finish off next week with sparkles and other festive touches—perfect for the season!

And, of course, we had an absolute blast on Christmas Jumper Day! The children looked amazing in their festive jumpers, spreading smiles all around the classroom.

Exciting Outing to Dorchester Library
On Thursday, we had our first Reception trip to Dorchester Library. The children enjoyed exploring the library, taking part in some creative crafts, listening to a story read by the friendly librarians, and even going on a full tour of the library’s different areas. They were fantastically behaved throughout the visit, and we were so proud of how well they managed the longer walk from school.

It’s been a week full of learning, creativity, and festive cheer. We’re so proud of all the children and can’t wait to continue our Winter and Christmas adventures next week! I have attached next week's plan below so please do check for changes from the norm and discuss these with your child if you feel they may need some pre-warning as this week is always a busy one but hopefully full of lots of magical experiences!

Thank you for your continued support!
Miss Godden and The Reception Team
