Hello Reception Families!
This half term so far, we’ve immersed ourselves in the wonderful world of Julia Donaldson, exploring three of her most loved books: Zog, The Smartest Giant in Town, and Room on the Broom. From magical story books to outdoor adventures, our learning has been full of imagination, creativity, and meaningful experiences.
In The Smartest Giant in Town, we explored Expressive Arts and Design by designing our own smart clothes for George using fabric and collage materials. We also created shiny crowns, just like his. Linking to Understanding the World, we talked about clothing for different weather and seasons, encouraging the children to think critically about how we dress for different environments.
Room on the Broom led us into exciting Literacy work, as we retold the story in chronological order, strengthening our sequencing and comprehension skills.
We’ve also introduced balance bikes into our outdoor provision, and the children have loved every moment of zooming around the playground! This has been an excellent way to improve balance, and promote confidence and independence.
Another exciting highlight has been our gardening sessions with Gardener Jim. The children have really enjoyed getting their hands dirty, planting seeds, watering the plants, and learning about how things grow. These sessions are helping them develop an understanding of nature and the environment.
Our Mini Ballers sessions have been a hit too, helping children build gross motor skills, coordination, and confidence.
The Reception classroom has also welcomed a brand new Fancy Dress Shop, where children are developing both their imaginations and Communication and Language skills through role-play. It’s been a joy to see them negotiating roles, using new vocabulary, and collaborating with friends.
We’ve also learned about lifeguards and beach safety, linking to Understanding the World and helping children become more aware of how to stay safe in different environments.
Phew that was a lot of photos!
☀️ Reminders for Next Week
As we continue to enjoy the beautiful weather, here are a few important reminders to help us keep everyone safe, happy, and ready to learn:
🌞 Sun Safety
Please apply long-lasting (8-hour) suncream to your child before school each morning. If your child brings suncream into school, they must be able to apply it independently and must not share it with other children.
Also, don’t forget to send your child in with a named sun hat and water bottle every day.
📚 Reading Diaries
Please remember to send reading diaries into school every Friday. You are welcome to log any reading, including books read at home by an adult. Every entry helps us support your child’s reading journey and celebrate their progress.
🥜 No Nut Policy
A polite reminder that we are a nut-free school. Please ensure that all packed lunches and snacks do not contain nuts or nut-based products. This is vital to keep children with severe allergies safe while at school.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us maintain a safe, nurturing, and positive learning environment for all.
It’s been a magical, sun-filled half term so far with so many moments of growth, laughter, and learning. Thank you for your continued support!
Warm wishes,
The Reception Team ☀️
