Sarfari, Alexander D Great and World Book Day

Hi Reception Families,

Now normally at the beginning of the blog I exclaim 'What a week' well this week, WHAT A WEEK!

There was such a positive vibe in Reception this week, it was wonderful to see the children so deeply engaged in their learning through play.

This week we were learning about Safari animals, we learnt where the continent of Africa is, and  about some of the animals who live there.  We have also really enjoyed watching Andy's Safari Adventure, we had a 'Play Project' where we designed our own 'Safari Mobile' to take Andy on his adventure. Play Projects are a wonderful way to structure play on a theme working with our peers in small groups. We give our play project a password to make it do something. It is wonderful to see the children so deeply in their play and working together.

We also had a sneaky visitor in the playground, there were confirmed sightings by Mr Spracklen, Mr Bascombe, Ms Evans and Mrs Briant.... There was a sneaky Crocodile.... To make sure we could use our outdoor area we made bridges, traps and tried to get the elephants come and scare it away by drawing leaves in chalk... Some children thought they saw the Croc, but we also think that the croc might be able to turn invisible!

Having a dry outdoor area has meant a welcome return to using chalk (oh how we missed it) we've found all sorts of ways of writing and practicing our pencil grip this week including on the climbing frame. Children were awarded 500 points for writing a word, 1000 points for writing their name and 5000 points for writing a sentence or a ditty (and luckily nobody asked me what the points were for! )

We've also a a very water based week, there was a lot of interest in making floods. I was so impressed with how the children worked out to make the water flow all the time. We worked together to tilt the watering can and keep it topped up so it was always flowed!

World Book Day was a real highlight this week, the children all looked wonderful ( 25,000 points for parents!) Thank you for coming to our story time, I hope you enjoyed The Balloon Tree?

We also made giraffes, practiced our fine motor skills by making paper chains, got the bikes out, practiced our numeral formation and learnt how to use the mighty split pin!

On Friday we had a wonderful time singing and listening to stories with Alexander D Great, it was such a treat!

Now, moving our attention to next week.

Firstly, it's our class assembly  on friday 10th March at 9.20 in the school hall, everyone is warmly invited to join us.

Drawing Club: Gorilla

Powermaths: Subtraction

Understanding the World: Life Cycle of a butterfly and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Excitingly we also have a new play shed big thank you to Mr Bascombe and Mr Smith (aka Mr Evans) for building it for us this weekend, I can't wait to see how the children use it!

As ever if you need anything please do get in touch!

Ms Evans and the Reception Team.
