China, great walls and pandas!

 Hello Reception Families,

It's been another busy week in Reception.

We have continued our learning focus on China this week. We have learnt about Chinese culture, the Chinese Flag and the Great Wall of China.

We worked together to build the Great Wall of China. It was wonderful to observe the children build their own Great Wall outside

In fact all our building outside has been amazing this week, we have enhanced our building by tying knots to keep it in place.

We've made Panda pictures, twisting our brushes to make it look like fur!

We've also continued to explore Chinese radicals, this week moving on from numbers on to writing.

In Drawing Club we have been focusing on The Magic Paintbrush, we have also made our own magic paintbrushes in Make and Create.

Our Chinese kitchen and fantastic dragon drawings!

Our words for Drawing Club this week were:

'If you are a king or a queen you are 'Regal'

When you are a bit scary you are 'Fierce'

When you need to run away you 'Flee'

When you are really hungry you are 'Ravenous' 

All children should have brought a pattern worksheet home with them today, please let me know Monday, if they haven't got one.

Children have really enjoyed this simple  fine motor activity this week, all you need is a colander and some pipe cleaners and you thread them through the holes, children might enjoy doing this activity at home!

A word about snack: Snack needs to be a healthy snack, the government recommends fruit or vegetables, we are seeing an increase of high sugar sweet snacks which are not within the our healthy eating guidelines.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at parent's evening next Monday or Tuesday Evening. I can't wait to share all the fantastic progress children are making.

Red Envelopes, New Year Lions and Dragons!

 Hello Reception Families,

What a lovely week we have had.

This week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year, this is the first of two weeks learning about China.

We've really enjoyed our new learning landscape this week, our writing area has been a big hit!

We've been practicing our Chinese numerals using paint.

We've also been writing 'red envelopes' which Chinese people send to each other with wishes of good luck.

The weather has been interesting this week (to say the least!) we have had a lot of fun, exploring ice and frost and all things wet and slippy!

We've been busy builders too!

On Wednesday we re-enacted the Zodiac story, which tell us how the Jade Emperor decided how to tell the number of years that has passed. We all had a turn at being the river and some children had a turn at crossing the river as the animals!

Children born in 2017 were born in the year of the rooster, children born in 2018 were born in the year of the dog.... Unsurprisingly I was born in the year of the tiger!

We also got the parachute out!

This morning we made Chinese lanterns and this afternoon we had the most wonderful time doing the Chinese Dragon Workshop!

In Drawing Club this week we watched Road Runner our words were:

Boulder, Patient, Ambush, Slithering, Zooming and Accident.

Home Learning:

All children should have brought home a pattern tracing sheet, one of the 'cake' patterns is complex, we have been practicing it this week, however if children find this tricky, it is ok to omit this one. (I have reassured the children this is ok!)

I have included a tripod pencil grip rhyme, this would be useful to keep for reference as we support children to develop their pencil grip over this term.

Unfortunately there are a number of cases of chicken pox within the cohort. Please refer to the letter sent recently by Mr. Spracklen. Chicken Pox
