A big ol' well done!

Hi all,

A very big well done to all the children in reception for their efforts in their assembly this morning. Thank you very much for all your help with practising lines at home.
Lots of people have asked whether they can have a copy of the video that was shown in today's assembly as well as the previous one done in the autumn term. When we come back I'll put a list up for who would like these and then get these ready for you!

Thank you also for all the fantastic home learning and Wow! Moments you have brought in over the last term. Lastly, make sure you all have a good rest! And eat lots and lots of........................... Vegetables!

The last few days...

Hello everyone,

As the last few days are approaching we are turning our attention to the summer term and all the things we'll be doing! When we come back we will be increasing the amount of time children spend doing adult led jobs and encouraging much more independence.
Before the end of the term we still have much to do! Tomorrow we are practicing for our assembly as well as having a quick look back over our 2D shapes and seeing how many 3D shapes we can remember. The last day of term will be very busy: we have our assembly first thing. We will then be decorating our own eggs and having some egg rolling races around the reception outside area. Egg sandwiches anyone? Also on Friday Mr. Farrington will be carrying out an Easter egg hunt around the school. Reception children will be working with their year 4 buddies.
On Friday children will be coming home with lots of things they have made for you as well as their PE kits.

What we're up to...

Hello everyone,

We've been up to an awful lot this week and will be doing lots next week as well as we approach the end of the Spring term. This week we've been looking at Wordle clouds - picture above - and the children have had a go at making their own Wordle cloud in the shape of Easter objects. In literacy we will also be thinking about creating our own clues for an Easter egg hunt. Of course we will actually be having an Easter egg hunt, next week.
In maths we are all having a go at adding together two single-digit numbers. Doing this with mini-eggs is an attractive prospect!
We're cracking on with our greenhouse as well so thank you to all those that have bought 2 litre bottles in so far. We will continue to accept these for the foreseeable future.
From next week we'll also be doing some planting in the garden. Hopefully some of the fruit and vegetables we grow will be able to gather before we break up in the summer.
Finally, in ICT we have been thinking about e-safety and keeping safe when using any technology. We're in the process of coming up with some class rules surrounding this.

Home learning ideas

Hello everyone,

This week we begin our topic looking at Easter and below there are some possible home learning ideas for you to try at home.

  • Make an Easter card for someone in the class and bring it in for them.
  • Create a colourful Easter egg.
  • As we are looking at our changing environment, draw or write some of the things that you can see changing
  • Find out which animals and plants, are born/begin to grow in spring.
  • As we've been looking at healthy foods in Jigsaw - use a paper plate (or other resource) to make a healthy plate and an unhealthy plate.

Finally, it is reception's 2nd class assembly next Friday (27th). Just an early reminder.

A few bits and bobs

Hello everyone,

Firstly, it is Comic Relief day tomorrow and We are asking all the children (and staff) to make themselves look funny for money. You are also more than welcome to contribute to a bake sale being held at school, If you would like to donate any cakes please bring them in to school tomorrow and hand them to us (not to eat). The cake sale will be held at the end of the day outside the school. Children can also write/say their favourite jokes to us in the class.

Also, you may well be aware that we have a mild obsession with Mr. Men at the moment in reception. As a result of this we are going to be changing the children's group names for teddy jobs. So on Monday morning you will come in to find new groups. We will also be having a topic about Mr. Men in the summer term - how couldn't we!

Finally, we are pressing on with our group reading sessions in school. Every child has two sessions a week with an adult firstly introducing the book and then reading through it again on another day. Could we please ask that children have their group reading books in their bags every day as the days for group reading regularly change and we cannot guarantee which day each child will be reading on. Thank you.

An ongoing plea for bottles

Hello everyone,

You may or may not be aware that we are building a bottle greenhouse at school and so far the reception class have taken the biggest role in this by cutting the bottoms off of bottles and threading them through bamboo canes. Our current work is on show outside the year 2/3 area - if you get the chance to see it. We are continuing to do this as the weather gets nicer and this is where we need your help. To make the greenhouse we need around 1,500 bottles. So far we've had around 400 bottles but we had to halt any more coming in as we had run out of space to store them! But now we have used a large bulk up, we can again store more new bottles.
If you have any 2l bottles like the one below we would love to have them to help us make our greenhouse! Unfortunately they have to be the shape of a classic 2 litre coke bottle otherwise they don't all slide together easily. Any help would be much appreciated. We will continue to need these bottles for the foreseeable future.
Hopefully this project will encourage children to reuse materials and promote the importance of recycling.

Friday- Comic Relief

This Friday is Comic Relief. Just a quick reminder that we are asking the children to dress funny for money!

In assembly on Friday we will be sharing favourite jokes.  Also after school on Friday we will be having a cake sale. Each class will be baking and decorating cakes. However if you are baking this week or would like to donate some cakes for our sale please hand them to the children's class teacher on Friday.

All of the school have been learning the 2015 Comic Relief Song 'Put on a funny face'. It is a brilliant song and very catchy.

What's going on this week...

Hello everyone,

Firstly, you may have noticed a fish tank at the back of the class this morning. In here we are going to watch some frog spawn grow before releasing it into the pond we have on site. Already, the frog spawn have emerged as tadpoles and have begun swimming around. We have tasked the children to come up with some names.

This week we are going to be moving our focus from day and night to sea turtles and how they use the day and night time to benefit themselves. In literacy we are going to be looking at life cycles and poems and in maths we are looking at doubling and halving in more detail as well as addition of 2 single digits.
We have also begun doing whole class PE to encourage more independence and perseverance from children. As and when the weather allows we will be doing our PE outside from now on. As the children have grown it may be the case where they need new PE pumps but we will strive to let you know if this is the case.

Maths ideas

Hello everyone,

Instead of giving a list of ideas for writing this week, below are a few ideas for some maths work. We are beginning to teach addition and subtraction and all children have begun to have a go at writing numerals. I'll leave it up to you as to how you present your work - we usually get some fantastic ideas!

  • See if you can find these shapes around your house - circle, square, rectangle, cube and cylinder.
  • Write the numerals 1-10 in as creative-a-way as you can think.
  • How many different ways can you add two numbers together to make 10?
  • Looking at the number 8. How many questions can you think of that have the answer 8? You could do addition, subtraction, counting objects etc.
  • Create a pattern using 3 different colours.

Finally, we have put up a poly-pocket containing children's hairbands and clips. We find a lot of these and will pop them in their for you!

Big pedal

Hello everyone,

Firstly, we have put two new displays up for you to have a look at. One in our classroom along the back wall and one out in the ICT suite. Both these displays contain pictures and work that were generated over the drama week that we had last week. Well worth a look!

Also, today was the beginning of a 3 week long big pedal competition. This competition is run annually across the whole country and encourages children and adults to ditch the cars and cycle or scoot to school instead. As a school we compete with the schools in the local area and every day take a record of how many children have come to school on their bike or scooter. Last year we came 2nd in the whole of Dorset and won the 3 balance bikes that are currently used in the reception outdoor area. We would love to go one better this year though. Parents/staff that cycle (or scoot) also count towards our numbers so dust off the bike and helmet!
