Displays and picnic

Hello everyone,

Tomorrow will be the last day before half-term and we are planning to finish off the day with a picnic. The food has all been made by the children and we will be tucking into it! If the weather is nice we will be heading outside.

If you have been through the school you may have also noticed the two displays that have been put up this week. On the wall outside the classroom we have made postcards about our time at Weymouth Beach last week - these include a photo that was taken at the beach. In the ICT suite there is another display board with our messages in bottles! There are still a few more to add to this but most of them are up now. Please feel free to come and take a look as the children are incredibly proud of their work.

Today we also had our first whole class ICT lesson. During the lesson the children were introduced to coding on Espresso - an internet site that allows you to program different characters to move as you wish.

Tomorrow the children will be bringing their PE kits home for a wash over the holiday.

The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch

Hi all,

Today we read the Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and began our work for the week. On Friday we are planning to have a class picnic - depending on the weather this could be inside or outside. To prepare for this, the children will  all be making something for the picnic. We are going to be making sausage rolls, jelly and peaches, fresh lemonade, a variety of sandwiches and sea biscuits. There will also be some other snacks available too!
In literacy this week we have started making messages to go into bottles. We have been encouraging children to think about descriptive words that they could use in their message to describe where they are. If you haven't brought a bottle into school yet, don't worry as we won't actually be putting the messages into the bottles until the end of the week.

Message in a bottle

Hi everyone,

Next week we will hopefully be writing our own messages that can be put into bottles. If you are able to bring in a small bottle to be used for this purpose, we would be very grateful. Thank you.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside...

Well, what a lovely day we've all had! We couldn't have asked for a better day in terms of the weather! Reception made it all the way down to Weymouth for our beach trip. We were joined by Pre-school for this trip and it was fantastic to see how reception children helped them. To think that it was about a year ago I first met this class, they have all done so much growing, physically and mentally!
At the beach we split into three groups and did a job. One job was making channels with buckets and spades. Another job was making sandcastles and the last job was collecting beach bits in little pots.
At the beach we also had our photos taken. These are going to be used in our literacy lessons this week - we're going to be making postcards!
This afternoon we were joined by pre-school again and all the children were given the chance to play together, which they did with no problems. We ended the day by having an ice lolly and a story outside.
A big thank you to all the parents that helped with this trip - apologies for the temperature on the coach back!

If you are yet to bring any sun cream in for  your child, please do so as the weather looks set to continue like this for a bit. The forms for us applying the sun cream can be found at the office.

The seaside!

Hello everyone,

This week is a bit of a special week as we have two rather different activities. Firstly, we have a slot in the life-education van that you may have seen in the school playground. The slot is going to be 'all about me' and hopefully the children will all be able to tell you something that they have learnt. The other special activity we have this week is a trip to Weymouth! We're going to be heading to the beach for the morning (Wednesday 14th), so we're all hoping for good weather! If we do have to cancel the trip, we will attempt to give you as much notice as we can.If there are any parent helpers that are available for the morning, please come and see us!
Alongside this, we will be doing all of the usual things in school! In literacy this week we're going to be making our own postcards, the plan is for the picture to be taken at the beach. These will form part of our display on the seaside that will be going up outside the reception classroom, in the ICT suite. In numeracy this week, each group has a slightly different job. We're going to continue looking at weight, as well as taking a dive into capacity. We're also going to be testing children on their shape knowledge. See if you can guess what these shapes are based on the clues...

I've got 3 sides...

I've got 6 square faces...

I've got 4 corners... (several shapes)

Feel free to bring your answers in on a Wow! Moment!

This week and tricky words

Well, so far this week we've been rushed off of our feet! The weather has been quite miserable too so the children haven't had too much time outside. This has given us a good opportunity to get children used to using 'indoor voices' more consistently.
In Literacy, the children have written some lovely Moon poems as well as started making their own stories on alien worlds! The creativity has been superb from the children and has really left us with little to do. We are trying to encourage children to be as independent as possible in their writing, using a sound mat (a mat with all the taught sound on) and saying the word to themselves to listen for the sounds. All of this work will go on a display about space, (hopefully) next week.
In phonics we are focusing on tricky words. I thought it might be useful to give you a list of the tricky words we have looked at. I've split the list into two; words we have looked at in terms of reading and those we have looked at writing.

Writing tricky words:
he                       her
she                      my
we                      are
me                      all
  be                       they
was                     you
the                       I
go                       no
to                        into

Reading tricky words (as well as above):
said                      have
like                       so
do                        some
come                    were
there                     little
one                       when
out                        what

I wonder if you can put one of the words we've learnt to write into a sentence??

Stop-go Animation Videos

Hello all,

We've got a lot to cram in to 4 days this week! In maths we're going to be learning about weights and the vocabulary associated with weighing. As well as that, children will continue to practise simple addition and subtraction sums! We are also keen to give children maths problems to solve, here is one for you to try at home but I'm sure parents will be able to think of more:

I'm thinking of a number - if I add 2 to this number I get 4. What is my number?

On top of the maths work we're doing this week, children will work in groups to make a stop-go animation video. These basically require the children to make models out of plasticine and then take photos of them doing something very gradually. When you put the photos back together and go through them quickly, it can look like a video. Each group has planned a space themed video to make. We will try and see if we can place the videos on the blog once the children have made theirs.
